When evaluating keyboard performance, different employment exams and industries measure speed using different terminology. Here is the complete breakdown of how each metric is calculated:
Net WPM
The universal standard for typing speed. Calculated as 5 character depressions per word, minus penalty deductions for uncorrected typos.
CPM / Keystrokes
Measures total raw key depressions made per minute. Standard conversion: 1 WPM = 5 CPM.
KDPH
Key Depressions Per Hour used in Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams. 10,500 KDPH equals 35 WPM.
Why Accuracy Matters More Than Raw Speed
Many typists focus solely on pushing their raw speed past 50 WPM, ignoring error rates. However, in government recruitment exams (SSC CHSL, CPCT, Railway NTPC), making errors leads to heavy penalty deductions. A candidate typing at 40 WPM with 98% accuracy will score higher than a candidate typing at 50 WPM with 85% accuracy.
